A Very Special Mill Dog
Written by: Diane Uding

I wanted to write this e-mail as a tribute to a very special little puppymill dog named Sassy Sue(aka Lacey). She was the most pitiful Shih Tzu I have ever seen and she stole my heart. We rescued Sassy and others from a miller in southern Iowa the day after Thanksgiving. I received a phone call this morning from a very special woman that adopted Sassy. She was crying on the phone and had called to tell me that Sassy died this morning. Sassy didn't die in a mill alone or in a cage. She died in the arms of a woman who loved her very much, but only had a month with her. Sassy was loved my many people in a very short time. Sassy was only 9 years old and a small Shih Tzu. She was blind, had dilated cardiomyopathy, some loss of kidney function, hypothyroid and pulmonary edema. Yes, she was a mess! She was going into congestive heart failure and her adopted Mom had to put her to sleep this morning.

Sassy could be a poster dog to represent life in a mill. I have a picture of her by my computer after she was groomed and cleaned up. She is wearing a cute little red sweater in the picture. If you would have seen her the day we picked her up and compared it to this picture you would never know that they were the same dog. She was robbed of a life of love that she so deserved! I only wish I could have gotten her out of that damn mill sooner.

Sassy will be my inspiration to continue saving these puppymill dogs and to hopefully work at running some of them out of business. I hope Sassy will inspire all of you out there too that rescue the mill dogs because if we don't, no one will.
